YouTube Premium Lite might be really happening this time.

YouTube could soon unveil a more affordable version of its premium subscription service, dubbed “YouTube Premium Lite,” in the United States, Australia, Germany, and Thailand. According to Bloomberg, this budget-friendly tier aims to cater to users who primarily watch general content rather than music videos. However, the publication did not disclose any potential pricing details for this upcoming plan.

A Second Attempt at Premium Lite?

This is not YouTube’s first foray into a lower-cost premium subscription. Back in 2021, the company piloted an ad-free version of “Premium Lite” in select European countries. The offering, which provided an ad-free experience at a lower price point than the standard YouTube Premium, was later discontinued in 2023.

Despite discontinuing the initial version, YouTube hinted in October 2023 that it was testing a “different version” of Premium Lite. Reports suggest that this new iteration may not be entirely ad-free but will significantly reduce the number of advertisements users encounter. A user who gained early access to this service reported that in Australia, the price was set at $8.99 AUD per month—nearly half the cost of the standard YouTube Premium subscription, which is priced at $16.99 AUD.

What to Expect from YouTube Premium Lite

Although YouTube has not yet released official details about the potential launch, Paul Pennington, a YouTube spokesperson, provided a statement confirming the ongoing tests. He stated, “We have been testing a new YouTube Premium offering that provides most videos ad-free, and we’re hoping to expand this option to even more users in the future with our partners’ support.”

While Pennington did not explicitly confirm if this version of Premium Lite would roll out in the United States or other markets, the fact that testing is actively underway suggests a wider release may be imminent.

How Will Premium Lite Differ from Regular YouTube Premium?

Currently, a standard YouTube Premium subscription offers a host of benefits, including:

  • Ad-free video streaming across all content
  • Background play (videos continue playing even when switching apps or locking the screen)
  • Offline downloads
  • Access to YouTube Music Premium

Premium Lite, on the other hand, appears to be a more stripped-down version, focusing on reducing advertisements rather than eliminating them completely. The biggest advantage of this plan would be affordability—making it an attractive option for users who find the regular Premium subscription too pricey but still want a better viewing experience than the ad-supported free version.

The Growing Demand for Mid-Tier Subscription Plans

The introduction of YouTube Premium Lite aligns with a broader trend in the streaming industry, where companies are experimenting with mid-tier subscription plans to cater to different user preferences. Services like Netflix and Disney+ have already introduced ad-supported and lower-cost tiers to attract budget-conscious subscribers.

YouTube’s strategy of reintroducing Premium Lite suggests the company recognizes the demand for flexible pricing models. With many users hesitant to pay full price for a premium subscription, offering a more affordable alternative could help YouTube retain and expand its subscriber base.

When Will YouTube Premium Lite Launch?

While there is no official launch date yet, the ongoing testing and the increasing frequency of leaks suggest that an announcement may be just around the corner. If YouTube proceeds with a global rollout, it could significantly impact the way users interact with the platform—providing a more enjoyable experience without requiring them to commit to the full cost of YouTube Premium.

For now, all eyes are on YouTube to see when—and where—Premium Lite will officially make its debut. If successful, this offering could mark a new era in YouTube’s subscription strategy, providing users with a more customizable and affordable way to enjoy their favorite content.
