Meta is rolling out a promising new feature for Threads—one that could reshape how users transition from X (formerly Twitter) to its growing platform. The company has begun testing a tool that allows users to seamlessly follow the same creators they already follow on X, making it significantly easier to rebuild online communities and stay connected with favorite content creators.

“We’re currently testing a way for you to find and follow creators from other platforms on Threads, making it easier to connect with the people and conversations that matter to you,” said Meta spokesperson Alec Booker.

A Frustration Finally Addressed

For years, creators and users alike have faced a common problem: migrating from one social media platform to another often means leaving their carefully cultivated communities behind. Many creators who moved to Threads or Bluesky in response to changes on X found themselves starting from scratch—losing large follower counts and struggling to re-engage with their audience. Likewise, users hoping to reconnect with those creators on new platforms were met with the tedious task of manually searching for each profile.

This new Threads feature is designed to eliminate that hassle.

How the Feature Works

Currently in beta testing, the feature invites users to “Find popular creators from X” when they open the Threads mobile app. Upon clicking the prompt, users are guided through a process to download their X following list and import it to Threads. The goal is to make setting up a familiar feed on Threads as frictionless as possible.

Though Meta hasn’t disclosed the specific method it uses to match X profiles with Threads accounts, the company has clarified that the feature will work for “popular creators”—meaning users may not be able to follow everyone they had on X, but will likely be able to reconnect with the platform’s more prominent personalities.

Why This Matters

This update is more than just a convenience; it’s a strategic move that could bolster Threads’ position as a competitive alternative to X. Many users have expressed frustration with X’s recent changes and have been actively seeking new digital spaces that better reflect their needs and values. However, the fear of starting over or losing touch with beloved creators has been a major barrier.

By offering a bridge between platforms, Meta is lowering that barrier significantly. It enables users to preserve the relationships and content streams they care about, all while exploring the fresh environment Threads offers.

Threads’ Growth Continues

Meta’s move comes as Threads shows impressive user growth. In January, the platform reportedly surpassed 320 million monthly active users (MAUs), up from 300 million in December. While MAU metrics can vary across platforms, this growth places Threads on a trajectory that’s rapidly catching up with, and potentially challenging, X’s user base.

What’s Next?

As the beta rolls out to more users, all eyes will be on how well the feature works and whether it delivers on its promise. If successful, this integration could become a key milestone in Threads’ evolution—offering a smoother, smarter way for users to make the leap without losing their digital identity along the way.

One thing is clear: Threads is no longer just a competitor—it’s actively working to become the preferred destination for creators and communities looking for a fresh start, without leaving their followers behind.
