More than a decade after its initial launch on phones, Apple Maps is now available in your preferred computer’s web browser.
Touted as a beta release, this version of Apple Maps can be accessed at https://beta.maps.apple.com/ (removing “beta” will direct you to Apple’s landing page for the mobile version of Maps). For Apple users, this may not seem significant since Maps is already available as a standalone desktop app on Macs. However, now you can access it from any browser, which is a nice addition.
The web version lacks many features of the desktop app. The interface is quite minimalistic, offering only Search, Guides, and Directions. The available data layers are Standard, Hybrid, and Satellite. The desktop app version also includes a 3D toggle, Apple’s Look Around feature, additional data layers, and more.
According to Apple, additional features, including Look Around, will be available “in the coming months.”
Apple Maps on the web is compatible with Safari and Chrome on Mac and iPad, as well as Chrome and Edge on Windows PCs. Currently, it’s only available in English, but Apple has indicated that support for additional languages, browsers, and platforms will be added “over time.”
