Google Maps is getting even more like Waze

Google is enhancing its navigation apps—Google Maps and Waze—with a slew of new features that bring the two closer together, while still maintaining their unique identities.

Google Maps Gets Waze-Like Features

One of the most notable updates is the integration of Waze-like incident reporting into Google Maps. This feature will now sport larger icons, making it easier for users to report updates on road closures, construction, speed cameras, or police presence. Additionally, other drivers will be prompted to confirm these incidents with just a tap, ensuring the information remains accurate and up-to-date.

Despite these changes, Google Maps and Waze are not merging into a single app. “Waze users are very dedicated,” Can Comertoglu, Head of Product for Google Maps, told The Verge during a recent press briefing. “They prefer some of the things that Waze does over Google Maps, and we know the reverse is true as well.” With over 500,000 contributors, Waze maintains a strong community, according to Waze director Tim Queenan.

New Destination Guidance

Google Maps is also introducing new destination guidance features. As you approach your destination, the app will identify the building’s entrance by highlighting it in red and marking the main entrance with a green indicator. This addition aims to simplify the final steps of navigation, making it easier to find exactly where you need to go. Furthermore, Google Maps will start displaying nearby parking lots, easing the often frustrating search for parking.

These improved incident reporting and destination guidance features are rolling out now on Android, iOS, cars with Google built-in, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The destination guidance update will be available “in the coming weeks.”

Waze Enhancements

Not to be outdone, Waze is also receiving significant updates. Users can now report new types of traffic cameras, including those monitoring bus or HOV lane usage, seat belt compliance, and texting while driving.

Waze is also launching a dedicated experience for event information. This feature will provide details about road closures for local events such as marathons, concerts, or sports games. Users will receive push notifications for road closures near their work, home, or frequent destinations. This new functionality is set to debut with the 2024 Olympic Games and will be available for future events as well.

Conclusion

Google’s ongoing updates to Google Maps and Waze reflect a commitment to enhancing user experience by incorporating popular features from both apps. While they continue to evolve, each app retains its unique characteristics that cater to their dedicated user bases. With these updates, navigating your city—whether for daily commutes or special events—will become even more seamless and informative.
