As part of Google’s continued migration away from the Nest app, Google now lets you manage Nest Cam IQ indoor and outdoor cameras through Google Home.

Google has taken a big step in unifying the smart home experience by expanding support for older Nest Cam models in the Google Home app. As part of a public preview, users can now manage their Nest Cam IQ indoor and outdoor cameras — both originally launched in 2017 — directly from the Home app. This update means that nearly all Nest cameras dating back to 2015 are now accessible through the Google Home app, eliminating the need to juggle between two separate apps for your home’s surveillance needs.

What This Means for Nest Users

Historically, managing Nest devices required the use of both the Nest app and the Google Home app. This was particularly inconvenient for users with a mix of older and newer cameras. Now, Google is changing the game by consolidating these functionalities into the Home app. When you transfer your Nest Cam IQ cameras to Google Home, you’ll gain access to features such as:

  • Video History Management: Review video history through event and timeline views.
  • Simplified Settings: Access and adjust camera settings directly from the Home app.
  • Live Stream Viewing: Add your cameras to the Favorites tab for quick access to live feeds.
  • Automation Setup: Integrate cameras with other smart home devices and routines for a seamless experience.

Joining the Public Preview

If you’re eager to test these new features, joining the public preview is straightforward. Simply enroll through the Home app or visit home.google.com. Once enrolled, you’ll see prompts in both the Nest app and the Google Home app (under the Favorites tab) with instructions on how to transfer your Nest Cam IQ cameras.

Flexibility to Switch Back

Google understands that change can be daunting. That’s why, if you decide the new setup isn’t for you, you can reverse the transfer of your Nest Cam IQ indoor and outdoor cameras back to the Nest app. However, it’s worth noting that this flexibility does not extend to all devices. For instance, Nest Hub Max users who bring their devices into the Home app cannot transfer them back to the Nest app.

Broader Device Support

This update builds on Google’s recent efforts to integrate other first-generation Nest devices into the Home app, including:

  • Nest Cam Indoor (Wired, First-Gen)
  • Nest Cam Outdoor (Wired, First-Gen)
  • Nest Hello / Nest Doorbell (Wired, First-Gen)

By gradually expanding compatibility, Google is making it easier than ever for users to manage their smart home ecosystem in one centralized location.

What About Devices That Still Rely on the Nest App?

While this update is a major step forward, not all Nest devices are supported in the Home app yet. The Nest Protect smoke detector and the Nest x Yale door lock remain exclusive to the Nest app for now. Google has reassured users that the Nest app will continue to be supported and that there are no changes to its functionality at this time.

Why This Matters

Google’s move to integrate older Nest cameras into the Home app is more than just a convenience upgrade; it’s a glimpse into the future of smart home management. By consolidating device controls, Google is simplifying how users interact with their smart homes, paving the way for a more intuitive and efficient experience.

How to Get Started

To explore the new features and manage your Nest Cams through the Home app, follow these steps:

  1. Enroll in the Public Preview: Open the Home app or visit home.google.com to join.
  2. Follow the Prompts: Look for instructions in the Favorites tab of the Home app or the Nest app to transfer your devices.
  3. Enjoy the Benefits: Start managing your video history, camera settings, and live streams all in one place.

With this update, Google is closing the gap between old and new devices, making it easier than ever to stay connected to your home. If you’ve been waiting for a more unified smart home experience, now is the perfect time to make the switch!
