On Monday, the tech giant published a detailed blog post explaining how it plans to enhance the quality and accuracy of its AI systems by leveraging synthetic data and differential privacy techniques.
The Problem: Underwhelming AI Experiences
While Apple has long been known for its hardware innovation and emphasis on user privacy, its AI capabilities—compared to competitors like Google or OpenAI—have received mixed reviews. Features like Genmoji, email and notification summaries, and other smart suggestions have at times lacked the contextual intelligence users expect.
To address these issues, Apple is doubling down on a nuanced approach: improving its AI models without compromising user privacy.
The Solution: Synthetic Data and On-Device Intelligence
Rather than relying on real user data—which can raise serious privacy concerns—Apple has developed a method to simulate user data using synthetic content. This synthetic data is designed to closely replicate the structure, tone, and format of real-world content without including any personal or user-generated information.
“Synthetic data are created to mimic the format and important properties of user data, but do not contain any actual user generated content,” Apple explained in its blog post.
The process begins with the creation of a large pool of synthetic messages across various themes and styles. These messages are then converted into embeddings—mathematical representations that encode key elements like language, topic, and length. These embeddings act as condensed summaries of each synthetic message, allowing Apple’s systems to analyze and compare them more efficiently.
How It Works: User Devices as Local Evaluators
Once the synthetic embeddings are ready, Apple sends them to a small, randomized set of user devices—but only for users who have explicitly opted in to share device analytics. These devices then locally compare the synthetic embeddings with actual content samples (like emails or notifications) stored on the user’s device.
The goal? To identify which embeddings most closely match real-world use cases, allowing Apple’s AI models to learn and improve—without any actual data ever leaving the user’s device.
This approach is grounded in differential privacy, a method Apple has championed for years. It ensures that no personally identifiable information is collected or transmitted, even when device behavior is used to improve Apple’s services.
Where It’s Being Used: More Than Just Email Summaries
Currently, Apple is applying this approach to refine its Genmoji models, the AI-driven feature that helps users create expressive, personalized emoji. But the company isn’t stopping there.
According to the blog post, synthetic data will soon play a critical role in improving several of Apple’s upcoming and existing features, including:
- Image Playground – for generating AI-enhanced imagery
- Image Wand – for visual content manipulation
- Memories Creation – for more accurate and emotionally resonant photo/video collections
- Writing Tools – for smarter, context-aware text suggestions
- Visual Intelligence – to improve on-device recognition of objects, scenes, and more
Apple also emphasized that it would continue using synthetic data to improve the quality of email summaries, which many users rely on for quick insights into their inboxes.
