Google has added automatic transcripts to videos in Drive.
Google is revolutionizing video storage and accessibility with the introduction of searchable transcripts for videos stored in Google Drive. This powerful new feature is designed to make video content more discoverable, helping users quickly locate specific information without the hassle of scrubbing through long recordings. The rollout has already begun for all Google Workspace users and is expected to be fully available by March 26th.
How Searchable Transcripts Work
Much like YouTube’s transcription feature, Google Drive’s new tool displays transcripts in a sidebar next to the video. The transcript appears as blocks of timestamped text, automatically syncing with the video’s audio. As the video plays, each text block is highlighted in real time, making it easy to follow along.
At the top of the transcript sidebar, you’ll find a search bar that allows you to input keywords or phrases. Once you search, matching text blocks are highlighted, and clicking on a specific block instantly jumps you to that exact moment in the video. This feature can save countless hours for researchers, content creators, and teams who rely on video documentation.
Enabling and Accessing Transcripts
Accessing transcripts is simple. When watching a video in Google Drive, click the settings icon at the bottom of the player. If a transcript is available, you’ll see the option to view it. Selecting “Transcript” will open the sidebar, where you can start exploring the text.
However, transcripts are only available for videos that already have captions. You can easily check this by looking for the “CC” button in the video player controls. No captions? No problem. Google Drive lets you generate automatic captions by right-clicking the video file, selecting “Manage caption tracks,” and choosing the option to generate captions. Once captions are created, they’ll automatically convert into searchable transcripts.

Why This Feature Matters
This enhancement makes video content far more manageable and accessible, especially for businesses and educational institutions that store large libraries of recorded meetings, lectures, training sessions, or webinars. Instead of manually reviewing footage to find specific points of discussion, users can now search for keywords and immediately jump to relevant sections.
Content creators, educators, and even legal professionals stand to benefit immensely. Whether you’re analyzing interview footage, reviewing legal depositions, or trying to find a particular section of a lecture, searchable transcripts streamline the entire process, boosting productivity and collaboration.
Final Thoughts
Google Drive’s searchable transcripts mark a significant step forward in making video content as easy to navigate as text documents. This feature bridges the gap between video and text, empowering users to interact with their content in a smarter, more efficient way. As the feature becomes widely available, it’s poised to change the way we manage, share, and use video content for years to come.
So, if you store videos in Google Drive, start exploring this new capability today — and discover just how much time and effort you can save with searchable transcripts at your fingertips.
