Google’s Learn About AI tool has more educational, textbook-style responses to guide you through new topics.

Google recently unveiled an innovative AI tool called Learn About, setting it apart from familiar chatbots like Gemini and ChatGPT. Built on Google’s newly developed LearnLM AI model, this tool isn’t just about providing answers; it’s about fostering a deeper understanding. Unlike typical chatbots, Learn About emphasizes educational methods and is “grounded in research” to adapt to how people learn best. With unique, interactive, and visually enhanced responses, Learn About aims to create an educational experience beyond static facts and definitions.

In testing, we explored how Learn About and Google’s Gemini AI each handled the expansive question: “How big is the universe?” Both tools identified “the observable universe” as being “about 93 billion light-years in diameter,” but their responses diverged dramatically in presentation and intent.

Gemini chose a more conventional approach, displaying a straightforward diagram from Wikipedia alongside a two-paragraph summary with links for further reading. Learn About, on the other hand, delivered a multi-dimensional response. It featured an eye-catching image sourced from the educational platform Physics Forums and layered in supplementary content, carefully designed to invite further exploration. Going beyond just presenting data, Learn About used “textbook-style” boxes to provide deeper context—explaining “why it matters” and expanding “Build your vocab” sections that offered word definitions for new or challenging terms. This makes Learn About not just a source of knowledge but a learning aid tailored to enrich understanding and curiosity.

Adding to the experience, Learn About offers a dynamic sidebar filled with related topics, encouraging users to continue their educational journey. This deliberate emphasis on context and curiosity-building is what positions Learn About as more than a simple Q&A tool; it’s an interactive companion in the learning process.

In another test, we asked Learn About a whimsical yet complex question, “What’s the best kind of glue to put on a pizza?” Previous AI search tools have struggled with quirky prompts like this, sometimes missing the context and delivering literal (and incorrect) responses. Impressively, Learn About provided an accurate answer, pointing out that glue isn’t meant for pizza while highlighting the question as a “common misconception.” This subtle touch suggests that Google is attuned to the unconventional ways people experiment with AI, and Learn About is equipped to handle diverse prompts—even amusing ones.

With Learn About, Google is taking AI to new educational heights, emphasizing an approach that informs, engages, and inspires. It’s clear this learning-focused chatbot goes beyond simply delivering answers: it crafts an experience that’s richer and more attuned to how we learn best, making it a compelling new tool in digital education. Whether you’re delving into cosmology or navigating curious pizza questions, Learn About shows that Google is evolving AI to be more than a source of information—it’s becoming an interactive learning partner.
