Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock and Remote Lock are designed to secure your device if it’s stolen.

Google’s latest theft protection features are finally arriving for Android users, giving them powerful tools to safeguard their smartphones if they’re ever stolen. The three new features—Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Lock—were initially unveiled earlier this year and are now starting to roll out across select devices. These tools aim to provide peace of mind by allowing users to swiftly lock down their phones, preventing thieves from accessing sensitive data.

Android expert Mishaal Rahman was among the first to notice these features, sharing that Theft Detection Lock and Offline Device Lock had appeared on the Xiaomi 14T Pro. Additionally, some Google Pixel users have reported seeing Remote Lock enabled on their devices. Based on user feedback, the features seem to be rolling out on a global scale.

Rahman confirmed the global rollout with this statement on social media:
“These three features actually appear to be rolling out globally, judging by all the replies I’ve received!”

What Are the New Theft Protection Features?

Each of the new security tools brings something unique to the table, all aimed at thwarting potential thieves and giving users faster, easier ways to lock their phones.

  1. Theft Detection Lock: This feature uses Google AI to recognize when someone literally snatches your phone. According to Google, it detects whether the phone is taken from your hand and whether the thief is attempting to run, bike, or drive away with it. Once this suspicious activity is identified, the device locks itself instantly, making it inaccessible to anyone but the rightful owner.
  2. Offline Device Lock: A critical feature for situations where a thief cuts off the phone’s internet access. Offline Device Lock can automatically lock your screen if the phone is disconnected from the internet, preventing thieves from tampering with settings or wiping the device. This goes beyond the current functionality of Google’s Find My Device, which relies on internet access to lock or locate a lost phone.
  3. Remote Lock: Previously, locking a stolen device remotely required you to log into your Google account—a task that can be stressful during an emergency. Remote Lock simplifies this process by allowing you to lock your device using just your phone number and a quick security challenge. It eliminates the need to scramble for your Google account password, providing a faster, more intuitive way to protect your phone.

A Global Rollout Underway

While these features have been confirmed on devices like the Xiaomi 14T Pro and Google Pixel, they are expected to become available across a broader range of Android phones soon. The global rollout hints at Google’s commitment to making these theft protection tools accessible to more users, empowering them with advanced technology to keep their personal information secure.

As phone theft continues to be a concern in many areas, these features arrive as a welcome upgrade to Android’s security offerings, making it harder for thieves to access stolen phones and reducing the risk of data theft.

What’s Next for Android Security?

As these tools reach more users, the question remains: What will Google do next in its pursuit of comprehensive device security? Android security has evolved significantly over the years, and features like these indicate that Google is focusing not only on recovery but also on prevention. The company’s continuous improvements to device security make it clear that protecting users in real time is a top priority.

With these theft protection tools, Android users can feel more secure knowing they have more control in the unfortunate event their phone is stolen. Whether it’s the immediate response of Theft Detection Lock, the seamless Offline Device Lock, or the convenience of Remote Lock, Google is giving its users the power to defend their devices—no matter the situation.

Stay tuned as these features make their way to more devices in the coming months!
