Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a groundbreaking development on Thursday: the company will start showcasing AI characters created by users through the Meta AI studio on Instagram. This exciting new feature will initially be tested in the U.S.
A New Era of AI Interaction on Instagram
Meta’s announcement coincides with the a16z-backed chatbot company Character.AI unveiling a feature that allows users to converse with AI avatars via phone calls.
In a broadcast post, Zuckerberg emphasized that these AI chatbots will be clearly marked to ensure users are aware of their nature.
“We’re rolling out an early test in the U.S. of our AI studio, so you might start seeing AIs from your favorite creators and interest-based AIs on Instagram in the coming weeks. These will primarily appear in messaging for now and will be clearly labeled as AI,” he stated.
Collaboration with Top Creators
Zuckerberg highlighted that the company has collaborated with popular creators, including the meme account Wasted and technology influencer Don Allen Stevenson III, to launch early versions of these creator-made chatbots.
Vision for AI Avatars
In an interview shared on his social channels, Zuckerberg expanded on the potential uses for AI avatars. “There needs to be a variety of APIs that cater to people’s diverse interests. A significant part of our strategy is enabling every creator, and eventually every small business on the platform, to develop an AI to engage with their community and, for businesses, their customers,” he explained.
Creators could leverage these AIs to interact with fans more effectively, addressing the challenge of responding to an overwhelming number of messages.
The Future of AI on Instagram
Zuckerberg acknowledged that perfecting AI avatars will be an evolving “art form,” requiring continuous experimentation and improvement. “We don’t yet know what will be the most engaging, entertaining, and trust-building formula,” he admitted. “We aim to provide tools that allow experimentation and discovery of what works best.”
Gradual Rollout
Meta will begin testing this feature with around 50 creators and a small percentage of users, planning to expand it to more people over the coming months. The goal is to fully launch by August.
