Microsoft now lists OpenAI as a competitor in AI and search

Microsoft’s intricate and evolving relationship with OpenAI, a partnership bolstered by a reported $13 billion investment, has taken a surprising turn. Despite their close collaboration, Microsoft has officially labeled OpenAI as a “competitor” for the first time in an SEC filing.

In Microsoft’s latest annual 10K report, OpenAI is listed among other AI rivals such as Anthropic, Amazon, and Meta. Furthermore, OpenAI has been categorized alongside Google as a competitor in the search domain, thanks to the recent announcement of OpenAI’s SearchGPT feature.

This shift in narrative comes amidst rising antitrust concerns, with the FTC scrutinizing Microsoft’s relationships with AI startups and similar investments by other cloud providers. In a significant move, Microsoft recently relinquished its board observer seat at OpenAI. This decision followed a dramatic episode last fall when OpenAI’s board temporarily ousted CEO Sam Altman, prompting Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to offer him and other key executives positions at Microsoft.

However, such SEC filings are often characterized by hyper-cautious warnings to investors, and the titles of “partner” and “competitor” are not mutually exclusive in the tech industry. For example, in 2000, Yahoo, then the leading search engine, partnered with Google to display its search results. This collaboration continued for a few years until Google eventually overshadowed Yahoo, becoming the dominant force in internet search. Despite being partners, they were always potential threats to each other’s dominance.

The tech landscape is replete with instances of power shifts, making it conceivable that Microsoft and OpenAI’s partnership could follow a similar trajectory.

Nevertheless, Microsoft is not relying solely on its relationship with OpenAI. In March, the company hired the co-founders of the billion-dollar AI startup Inflection AI, Mustafa Suleyman and Karén Simonyan, to spearhead its new Microsoft AI division. Microsoft is also heavily investing in its own AI initiatives, including Microsoft Copilot, building a future that can stand independently from OpenAI’s influence.

In summary, while Microsoft and OpenAI navigate the complex dynamics of being both partners and competitors, Microsoft continues to diversify its AI strategy, ensuring it remains a formidable player in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
