OpenAI hit by two big security issues this week

Software vulnerabilities can be patched, but public opinion isn’t as easily hotfixed.

OpenAI has been making headlines regularly, and this time it’s due to two significant security concerns. The first issue involves the Mac app for ChatGPT, while the second raises broader questions about the company’s cybersecurity practices.

Unencrypted Conversations in Mac ChatGPT App

Earlier this week, engineer and Swift developer Pedro José Pereira Vieito discovered that the Mac ChatGPT app was storing user conversations locally in plain text rather than encrypting them. Since the app is only available from OpenAI’s website and not on the App Store, it bypasses Apple’s stringent sandboxing requirements. After The Verge covered Vieito’s findings, the exploit gained widespread attention. In response, OpenAI released an update to encrypt locally stored chats.

For non-developers, sandboxing is a security measure that isolates applications to prevent potential vulnerabilities and failures from affecting other apps on the same machine. Storing local files in plain text means sensitive data can be easily accessed by other apps or malware, posing a significant security risk.

Internal Security Breach and Whistleblower Fallout

The second issue dates back to 2023, with ongoing repercussions. Last spring, a hacker illicitly accessed OpenAI’s internal messaging systems, obtaining sensitive information about the company. According to a report by The New York Times, OpenAI’s technical program manager, Leopold Aschenbrenner, raised alarms with the company’s board of directors. He argued that the hack revealed internal vulnerabilities that could be exploited by foreign adversaries.

Aschenbrenner now claims he was fired for disclosing information about OpenAI and voicing security concerns. A representative from OpenAI countered, stating, “While we share his commitment to building safe AGI, we disagree with many of the claims he has since made about our work.” They also emphasized that Aschenbrenner’s departure was not related to whistleblowing.

Broader Implications for OpenAI

App vulnerabilities and hacker breaches are challenges faced by every tech company. Contentious relationships between whistleblowers and employers are also not uncommon. However, given the widespread adoption of ChatGPT by major industry players and the increasing scrutiny on OpenAI’s practices, these recent issues raise critical questions about the company’s ability to manage data securely.

As OpenAI continues to navigate these security challenges, the stakes are high. The company’s handling of these incidents will likely influence public perception and trust in its ability to safeguard user data in the future.
