Pinterest is doubling down on its popular collage format by rolling out a brand-new Remix feature, aimed at sparking creativity and engagement. After launching its collage tool last year, which allows users to combine images and cutouts to craft unique visual stories, the platform is now empowering its community to take it a step further by remixing existing collages. This move encourages users to reinterpret and personalize other people’s creations, making content on Pinterest even more dynamic and collaborative.

Much like the Remix tools found on short video platforms like Instagram and Snapchat, Pinterest’s version lets users borrow an existing collage and put their unique spin on it. Creators who prefer to keep their work untouched can opt-out by turning off the remix option in their settings, ensuring that the choice to remix remains in the hands of the original creator.

To create your own remix, simply navigate to the “Remix a collage card” option in the collage tool or tap the Remix button on a collage while browsing Pinterest. Once you’ve made your edits, the final published collage will feature both your name and the original creator’s, providing a seamless way to acknowledge the collaborative nature of this new feature.

But that’s not all Pinterest has up its sleeve. In addition to the Remix feature, the platform is making it easier than ever for users to download and share their collages in a variety of video formats. From traditional video to timelapse, unscramble, ink, and analog effects, the options give creators the flexibility to express their style and creativity in a new way. With these enhancements, Pinterest is positioning itself as a potential new contender in the short-form video space, broadening its appeal beyond static images.

Creators can also download collages as images, and Pinterest has announced plans to integrate more sharing options to other social platforms later this year. This means that creators won’t be limited to the Pinterest platform when showcasing their artistic vision—spreading the reach of their creations across the digital landscape will be easier than ever.

David Temple, Head of Pinterest’s in-house incubator, Two Twenty, which spearheaded the development of collages, shared his excitement about the platform’s direction: “We’ve seen incredible adoption of collages. They are saved at significantly higher rates compared to other Pin types, especially among Gen Z, who are using them as a powerful form of self-expression.”

Since the start of the year, Pinterest has seen an eye-popping 418% increase in the number of collages created. These creative compilations have become a go-to tool for everything from planning outfits and curating beauty routines to envisioning dorm room setups. Gen Z, in particular, has embraced this creative outlet, with 72% of daily collage users belonging to this generation. Pinterest is now prioritizing making collages even more feature-rich, recognizing that they are more engaging than traditional Pins.

The collage feature first emerged through Pinterest’s iOS app called Shuffles, launched in 2022. Due to its popularity, the collage tool was later integrated into Pinterest’s main app, allowing for broader usage and engagement.

Pinterest isn’t just leaning into collages as a form of user engagement—it’s also exploring their potential as a revenue driver. In recent months, the platform has invited advertisers to create collages using cutouts of product pins from their catalogs, which they can then promote as ads. During Pinterest’s Q2 2024 earnings call, the company revealed that major brands like Nike, John Lewis, and Bumble have already jumped on board, using collages to promote their products in an innovative way.

With more than 522 million global monthly active users, Pinterest continues to grow as a creative platform, with Gen Z leading the charge in terms of engagement. As the company continues to introduce new tools like Remix and video-sharing options, it’s clear that Pinterest is not just a place for inspiration—it’s a space for creation, collaboration, and commerce.

In the coming months, as Pinterest rolls out more integrations and sharing capabilities, both creators and brands can expect even more opportunities to engage, inspire, and connect with their audiences in fresh, creative ways.
