TikTok is taking a significant step in supporting child safety by partnering with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) to introduce real-time Amber Alerts directly into users’ For You feeds across the United States. This innovative approach leverages the platform’s immense reach to rapidly disseminate crucial information about missing children, increasing the likelihood of a swift and safe recovery.
How It Works
When law enforcement activates an Amber Alert, TikTok will now display it to users in the designated search area. The app determines a user’s location using their device’s IP address, ensuring that only relevant alerts appear in their feeds. The alerts will include vital details such as the missing child’s photograph, description, last known location, and any other pertinent information that could assist in the search efforts.

This move builds on the success of a pilot program launched in Texas, where Amber Alerts on TikTok were viewed over 20 million times. During the trial period from August to December 2024, the initiative generated 2.5 million visits to NCMEC’s website, reflecting a high level of engagement and potential effectiveness in aiding recoveries.
Why TikTok?
With millions of daily active users, TikTok is uniquely positioned to raise awareness in ways that traditional alerts may not. Young users, who are often less likely to check conventional notification systems, are more engaged with their For You feeds—making TikTok a powerful tool in the urgent search for missing children.
“Every second counts when a child goes missing,” said Gavin Portnoy, Vice President of Communications & Brand at NCMEC. “By harnessing the reach and speed of a platform like TikTok, parents, caregivers, and communities nationwide can become powerful advocates in the urgent effort to locate missing children.”
More Than Just Alerts
In addition to pushing Amber Alerts, TikTok is also donating advertising credits to NCMEC. These will be used to amplify messaging around missing children and promote safety-related information, furthering public awareness and education on the issue.
This initiative aligns TikTok with other social media giants that have previously integrated Amber Alerts into their platforms. Facebook has been pushing Amber Alerts to users since 2016, while Instagram followed suit in 2022. TikTok’s adoption of this feature solidifies the growing role of social media in public safety and child recovery efforts.
A Community Effort
By embedding Amber Alerts into one of the most widely used social platforms, TikTok is turning its user base into a potential network of digital first responders. This integration not only increases the visibility of missing child cases but also fosters a community-driven approach to safety and awareness.
In a world where social media continues to shape how we communicate and receive information, TikTok’s initiative is a testament to how technology can be harnessed for good. With real-time alerts reaching millions of users instantly, the chances of recovering missing children could improve significantly—one share, one view, and one alert at a time.
